With the interest in Korean content growing, as we can clearly see with K-pop and K-dramas’ popularity, the country’s culture is getting more known; from cinematography to traditional clothing, various aspects of culture and History also spark new interests.
Such is the case of bojagi (보자기), the Korean square fabric and the wrapping art using it; with uses ranging from practical purposes such as making transportation bags, to gift wrapping and decoration, bojagi has been used since the Joseon dinasty. It has now emerged as an environmentally-friendly, modernised crafts, combining creativity and esthetics with reusable fabrics made of various textiles with different colours.
Several books, video tutorials and websites are now introducing this art worldwide; in Lausanne, Switzerland, a few participants had the opportunity to attend a workshop and start learning the bojagi wrapping technique with a first hands-on experience, as HallyuKorea association president Liz Yoon and “Sur un air de Japon” shop owners Michelle Winteregg Nakao and Kyohei Nakao collaborated to offer this special class during a K-Pop-Up store event organised at the shop on September 27 and 28, 2024.
